Book Discussion

On Wednesday, November 18, at 2 p.m., Dr. Ba Tejani will present a book discussion on his latest book, Laughing in the Face of Terrorism, a collection of new plays, fresh poems, and old and new stories where the search for harmony is the main theme. Join us for the story of how this marvelous collection came to be created by East Africa’s most versatile writer.

On Tuesday, November 10, at 10:30 a.m., Arthur Matteson, Lynbrook village historian for over 20 years, will discuss his book, Water and Ice: The Tragic Wrecks of the Bristol and the Mexico on the South Shore of Long Island.

On Monday, January 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., we will be hosting a job fair sponsored by the NYS Department of Labor and Hempstead Works. Vendors will be available to review your resume and to ask questions. More information will be in our January/February newsletter.

2010 NYSCA Decentralization Grant Workshop

On Saturday, October 3, at 1:30 p.m., the Huntington Arts Council will at the Library to help individual artists and not-for-profit organizations planning to apply to the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Regrant Program in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. All applicants are required to attend an application workshop. Please RSVP to Huntington Arts Council, 631-271-8423 ext. 16. The deadline for the grant application is Friday, November 6 at 5 p.m.

SAT Workshop for Teens

Saturdays, noon to 2 p.m., beginning September 12, 19, 26; October 3, 10, 17. Cost: $80 Non-Refundable. Get ready for the SATs by attending this review workshop at the Library. October is Archives Month

The Freeport Memorial Library, in partnership with the Freeport Historical Society, is maintaining two online resources for Freeport history. Long Island Memories – http://www.longislandmemories.org/. This collection includes over 2,100 images pertaining to Freeport’s history and local newspapers from 1895 are available fully searchable on the web.
Freeport History Blog – http://www.freeportlihistory.blogspot/. com . This portal to historical information about the Village includes population information, biographies of notable residents, urban legends, historical locations and much more.

Nassau County Assessment Outreach Program

Presented by Nassau County Department of Assessment on Wednesday, September 23, 2 to 4 p.m. The Department of Assessment will bring its office operations to the Library. Volunteers will have laptop computers linked to the county’s database to help process your property tax exemption applications such as Basic and Enhanced STAR, Veterans, Senior Citizens, Cold War Veterans, Volunteer Firefighter and Ambulance Worker, Disabilities Limited Income, and Home Improvement.

Are You an Entrepreneur?

Presented by Community Development Corporation on Thursday, September 17, 7 to 9 p.m. This free introductory business-planning course is open to current and prospective small-business owners. The process of developing a business plan for a successful, cash-healthy, business will be discussed.

News, Notables, and the Nation

with Howard J. Shurdut, on Thursday, 2:30 p.m., September 17 and October 22. Harvard graduate and world traveler Howard Shurdut will explore the events and the movers and shakers shaping our world today. He will offer his opinion and insights for audience debate.

Senior Property Tax Reductions for the Village of Freeport and Nassau County

With Joe Mazza on Tuesday, September 8; Friday, September 11; and Monday, September 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., by appointment only. Mr. Mazza, a volunteer with Family and Children’s Association, will be at the Library to help seniors, veterans, and those who are physically or mentally challenged complete initial applications and annual renewal forms for property tax reductions. Applicants must have annual incomes less than $40,000. Those renewing their request must bring their renewal forms. Those who are fi ling for the first time may pick up an applications at the Library. Please call the Community Services Desk at 516-379-3274, ext. 207, to schedule a one-hour appointment.

Budgeting and Bookkeeping Workshop for the Layman

Conducted by Georgia Joseph-Grant, public accountant. Part I: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 7 to 9 p.m., and Part II: FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 7 to 9 p.m. In today’s tough and highly unpredictable economy, the individual who knows budgeting, bookkeeping, and accounting is in a winning position. Learn how to set monthly targets and prepare for contingencies. Registration is limited to 25 participants.

Putting the Garden to Bed: Fall Gardening

Presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension, on Thursday, September 10, 2:30 p.m. A representative of the Cornell Extension will discuss what to do in the garden to get ready for winter. Topics include cleanup, mulching, cutting back perennials, fertilizing, soil pH testing, and composting.

Current Events in Perspective at 1 p.m.

With Michael D’Innocenzo-Libresco, of Hofstra University. on Wednesday, September 9 and October 14. Professor D’Innocenzo-Libresco will offer his insightful perspective on the people and events that shape our world today. Audience participation is encouraged. Tai Chi for Health and Fitness

Presented by Kathy Waszmer, Certified Tai Chi Instructor from the Arthritis Foundation, Long Island Chapter. Thursdays, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., beginning September 3, 10, 17, 24 & October 1, 8, 15, 22. Back by popular demand, Kathy Waszmer returns for another eight-session course to show you how to tone and stretch your muscles without putting stress on your knees,

Presented by Western Suffolk BOCES. BOCES will present a series of hands-on, beginner-level workshops for novice computer users. Registration is limited to 24 participants. Freeport residents may register at anytime; nonresidents may register at the Reference Desk beginning Tuesday, September 8.

A Passage to India by E.M. Forster on September 8, at 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Forster’s novel explores the personal relationship between an Englishwoman and an Indian doctor during the colonial period of India’s history. The novel poses serious questions about race, sex, religion, and truth.

Pan’s Labyrinth on September 25. This chilling fairy tale is set against the backdrop of the fascist regime in 1944 Spain. BUS TRIP

Tour of Brooklyn & the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, NYC. The cost is $76 per person. DATE: TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27; LEAVE: 10 a.m. (leave from Freeport Recreation Center, 130 East Merrick Rd.); RETURN: approximately 8 p.m. Enjoy lunch in one of Brighton Beach’s finest and oldest Russian restaurants. After lunch, enjoy a narrated bus journey through the heart of Brooklyn’s immigrant neighborhoods. Next, we visit Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where we will take a walking tour of the streets surrounding the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, which is dedicated to preserving the immigrant heritage of Americans. The cost of the trip includes roundtrip transportation in a luxury coach, tours, lunch, admission to the museum, and some gratuities. Tickets go on sale for Freeport residents in the main lobby on September 1; for nonresidents, on September 8.

Kevin Maynor, Bass - Sunday, September 27, 2:30 p.m.

Kevin Maynor is the first apprentice artist from the West to study at the Bolshoi in Moscow. He is a Fulbright Award winner, a recipient of the George London Award, and a Richard Tucker Career Grant winner. Mr. Maynor will perform Die Winterreise (The Winter Journey) by Franz Schubert and other works. This program was made possible by a generous donation from the Dr. Rudolph and Mildred Joseph Foundation.

Nicholas Pappone - Sunday, September 20, 2:30 p.m.

At the age of 13, after seven years as a child actor, Nicholas Pappone abandoned the stage for the violin. He will perform works by Bach, Franck, Mozart, Kreisler, Wieniawski, and Rachmaninoff.

Leonard Bernstein presented by Phillip Malamud, music historian

On Friday, September 18, at 2 p.m., Dr. Malamud will discuss the multitalented Leonard Bernstein. Extensive video of his performances and excerpts from his stage works, including West Side Story and On the Town, will be presented.

Opera Video and Discussion presented by William Coble

Princess Ida by Gilbert and Sullivan on September 17, at 1 p.m. Princess Ida’s university, established to prove the superiority of the enlightened woman, is invaded by men masquerading as females – with hilarious results.

Marianela Santurio - Sunday, September 13, at 2:30 p.m.

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Marianela Santurio, a world renowned Cuban American pianist will present masterworks by outstanding Cuban and European composers.

Art Lecture - Picturing America

On Thursday, September 3, at 1 p.m., Thomas Germano, Professor of Visual Communications at SUNY Farmingdale will provide expert commentary on the National Endowment for the Arts photographic exhibit of famous American art. This powerpoint presentation features reproductions of masterpieces in art, architecture, sculpture, photography, pottery, and furniture. This program has been made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Art Exhibit - 9/11 by Marc Josloff

During the month of September, the 9/11 mural project will be at the Freeport Memorial Library. It is a collaborative effort between instructor/designer Marc Josloff and seven of his junior high art students. This is the first time the mural will be formally presented to the public. A reception will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2 to 4 p.m.

John Starks visits FML


Former New York Knicks player John Starks came to the Freeport Memorial Library to promote the Knicks Read to Achieve program. The program was presented by Power to Learn, a service of Cablevision, and sponsored by Kia Motors and the Knicks. On Tuesday, August 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Club with us. We will be serving brunch and playing Wii. This program is open to all teens who participate in the Summer Reading Club.

Scavenger Hunt

On Wednesday, August 26, 9 to 11 a.m. It’s time for our annual scavenger hunt! Participate in this hunt at the Library and win prizes. You will be searching for clues before the Library opens at 10 a.m. Be at the north parking lot entrance at 9 a.m. and the Library staff will let you in. Refreshments will be served. End of the Summer Reading Club Party 2009 for Tweens

On Monday, August 17, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., come celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Club with us. We will be serving lunch and playing American Karaoke Idol. This program is open to all tweens who participated in the Summer Reading Club. For grades 5 - 6.

Summer Reading Club Party: Harry Potter Magic Show

Presented by the Arnie Kolodner Magic Theatre. On Monday, August 17, 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m., there will be a party for all those involved in the Summer Reading Clubs. Award-winning magician and actor Arnie Kolodner portrays Professor Dumbledore as he leads the children in a wizarding class at Hogwarts. He causes objects to appear, disappear, transfigure and levitate. From August 1 through 15, Reading Club, members will have to notify staff which party they will be attending. Free tickets will be distributed.

Be Creative with Music

Presented by Pamela Carlton, M.T., B.C. On Thursday, August 13 from 10 to 10:30 a.m.: grades preK to K and 11 a.m. to noon: for grades 1-4. This music workshop will include interactive songs to encourage children to express themselves through musicmaking. A variety of percussion and melodic percussion instruments will be introduced in this enjoyable educational event.

Chasing Rainbows: A Story-telling Musical Concert

Presented by Nadine Scharman, Vivian Israel, and Nicole Padden. On Wednesday, August 12, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. This performance of Nadine Scharman’s original book, Chasing Rainbows, will feature multicultural songs from Italy, Spain, Israel, Mexico, Japan and Nigeria. The North Merrick Children’s Choir will be singing. Audience participation will be encouraged.

Presented by the Center for Science Teaching and Learning. On Wednesday, August 5, from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Examine a dig site, using math as well as science to create investigation grids. Dig for bones and other evidence of early life by using a variety of authentic tools. For grades 1-4.

Wizard Cupcakes on a Cone

Presented by Leslie Vanegas; On Friday, August 7 from 11 to 11:45 a.m. (For grades 3-4). Join us as we create magical wizard cupcakes on a cone. Use your imagination as you decorate your own cupcake using edible treats like icing, pretzels, and candy. Then enjoy eating your wizardly creation as we read a few magical stories. A nonrefundable materials fee of $1 is due at time of registration.

Freeport Cinema at 3 and 7 p.m.

On August 7, the Library presents, Frost/Nixon: for three years after being forced from office, Richard Nixon remains silent. Then in the summer of 1977, the former president agrees to sit with David Frost for one all-inclusive interview to answer questions about his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency; Rated R; 122 min.; 2008.

On August 21, the Library presents, In Bruges; after a difficult job in London, two hit men are ordered by their boss to cool their heels in Bruges, Belgium. Very much out of their comfort zone, the two men fill their days living like tourists and eventually change their views of life and death. This is an independent film; Rated R; 107 min.; 2008.

On August 28, the Library presents, Body of Lies: in this bold spy thriller, the CIA is on the hunt for the mastermind responsible for a wave of terrorist attacks in Europe. As CIA operative Roger Ferris nears his target, he discovers trust can be just as dangerous as it is necessary for survival; Rated R; 128 min.; 2008.

Identity Theft

On Thursday, August 13, at 2:30 p.m., a representative from the New York State Attorney General’s office will discuss how to protect yourself from identity theft and what steps to take if you become a victim.

Transit Solutions: How to Get Around Long Island for Less

A representative from Transit Solutions will be at the Library on Wednesday, August 12 at 2:30 p.m., for an informative session that includes an overview of Long Island’s transit system and the various options and discounts available. This program is presented by the Metropolitan Transit Association.

Home Staging to Sell Your House

On Tuesday, August 11 at 7:30 p.m., Inside Out Design, Incorporated, will be at the Freeport Memorial Library with some helpful hints about selling your home. If you do not know what home staging is and if you don't know the top ten reasons your house is not selling, Inside Out Design will teach you some easy steps to repair and update your home. Topics will include landscaping, room makeovers, and more.

Home Foreclosure: Where to Turn for Help

On Tuesday, August 4, at 7:30 p.m., Seidia Bernard, Esquire of the Nassau County Bar Association. Ms. Bernard, an experienced commercial attorney, will focus on providing practical advice to homeowners who are facing deliquency and/or foreclosure on their home mortgages.

Spanish for Adults presented by Nassau Community College

On August 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. An instructor from Nassau Community College will begin a four-week beginner’s workshop is for adults who want to learn everyday Spanish words and phrases and for those who just want to brush up on their skills. Freeport residents may register at the Reference Desk anytime; nonresidents register beginning July 14.

Core Four Business Planning

Presented by Community Development Corporation on Mondays, AUGUST 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 6 to 9 p.m. The Cost is $40. This four-session, 12-hour course will help entrepreneurs understand how to set up a business. The course provides planning concepts and tools to help existing and potential business owners determine the viability of their business plans. Great Books: Fifth Reading Series with Dave Opatow

On Tuesday, August 11 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The next reading will be Poetry by Derek Walcott. In 1992, Mr. Walcott became the first West Indian writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. The selections chosen for discussion are “The Schooner’s Flight” and “A Far Cry from Africa.”

Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner; Leader: Suzanne Welker. Lyman Ward, a retired historian who is ill and wheelchair-bound, researches and writes about his pioneer grandparents. Angle
of Repose was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1972.

Art Exhibit - Abstract Painting by Cristina Artusa


From August 3 to 29, the Freeport Memorial Library will have the artwork of Cristina Artusa on display. Ms. Artusa, a graduate of Molloy College, has had several exhibits on Long Island. Her abstract paintings are created using acrylic paints and a spackle knife.

Merilee’s Melodies: The Music of Harry Warren

Presented by vocalist Merilee Kaufman on Thursday, August 27, at 2 p.m. Ms. Kaufman has studied piano, jazz-dance, ballet, voice, and acting. Harry Warren wrote over 700 songs including “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby”, and “That’s Amore”.

JazzBone - Friday, August 14, 7:30 p.m.

Performed by Scott Ross, John La’Cella, and Bobby Cattrano. JazzBone is an accomplished group who will perform great jazz music.

Classics to Jazz - Thursday, August 6, 2 p.m.

Presented by pianist and lecturer, Dr. Judith Alstadter. Dr. Alstadter has given concerts and lectures throughout Long Island. She will discuss and play musical selections ranging from classics to jazz.

This past year the Library increased the number of computers available for adults from 13 to 32. A grant was secured to renovate the Children’s Room and to refurbish the circulation desk. During the coming year the Library plans to continue to reconfigure the adult area to provide more effective service.

Music for Students by Students: Long Island Composers Alliance

On Sunday, March 29 at 2 p.m., the Freeport Memorial Library will present a concert featuring original compositions by LICA members performed by students. The winning selection in LICA’s Sixth International Musical Composition Contest will be played. This is part of an ongoing project begun five years ago, funded by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport.

Bus Trip: NYC: Rubin Museum of Art and Tour of Chinatown

The Freeport Memorial Library will host a tour of the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan. After the tour, we will have lunch in Chinatown and then a docent from the Museum of the Chinese in America will lead us on an hour’s tour of Chinatown. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes. The cost includes roundtrip transportation in a luxury coach, admission to the rubin Museum of Art, lunch, and gratuities. Tickets for Freeport residents will go on sale March 30 in the Library lobby; for nonresidents, April 6.

Child Safety and Protection Program

On Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to noon, New York Life Insurance Co. will be in the lobby providing free fingerprinting and photos for Child Identification Cards.

Bus Trip A Taste of Harlem

DATE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17; COST: $80 per person.
When it comes to food, Harlem has always been a stellar neighborhood. Ethnic restaurants and small eateries have made Harlem a great place to visit, and the food continues to be a major attraction. Savor the many different delights of the area. This tour will also include a peek inside a historic brownstone. We may also have time to visit the African Market.
