Freeport Author Tom DeFazio


Freeport author Tom DeFazio presents his new book of poetry to Lee Ann Moltzen of the Freeport Memorial Library. Mr. DeFazio, a freelance writer, has been honored numerous times by the North American Mature Publishers Association of Long Island. Freeport Author Millicent Vollono


Freeport resident Millicent Vollono presents her book The Five Towns to Freeport librarian Regina Feeney. Millie has been a librarian at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library for nearly 30 years. A music specialist and curator of the local history collection, she is the library’s Web site developer and author of its local history blog. Our Friend Martin: An Adventure Inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Civic Reflection: Community Conversations

On Sunday, January 16 at 2 p.m., join Pastor Eddie Jusino of First Presbyterian Church of Freeport in some engaging dialogue about the contributions Martin Luther King, Jr., made during his lifetime and how he helped to make our world a better place. Steal Away: The Story of a Homesteader and Exoduster

On Sunday, February 6 at 2:30 p.m., join us for a one-woman narrative written and performed by Penny Musco. Set in 1880, Steal Away weaves together historical accounts of African Americans who sought free land by taking advantage of the Homestead Act of 1862, and their exodus from the South. These homesteaders called themselves Exodusters, likening their flight to the biblical exodus of Moses and his fellow slaves out of Egypt.

Dancing: Intrinsic Element of Salsa

On Sunday, February 27 at 2:30 p.m., Mr. Jose Obando will talk about percussion in salsa, discuss social contact dancing, and bring along some instruments from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Naazir Person Jazz Ensemble

On Sunday, February 20 at 2:30 p.m., enjoy this tribute to African American jazz artists performed by Naazir Person and his ensemble of elite professionals.

Sima Piano Trio


On Sundau, February 13 at 2:30 p.m., pianist Sofya Melikyan, violinist Sam Merdinian, cellist Ani Kalayijian will perform a medley of powerful and heartfelt interpretations of classical and ethnic repertoire. This concert is made possible by funds from the Mildred and Dr. Rudolph Joseph Foundation.

Celebrating Chinese New Year!


On Sunday, January 30 at 2:30 p.m., the Chinese Theatre Works will perform Chinese music on the guzheng (zither) and other traditional Chinese instruments. This program includes an introduction to Chinese folk and classical music, as well as the lore and mythology of the instruments.

The Joan Roberts Players

On Sunday, January 23 at 2:30 p.m., the Joan Roberts players which include vocalists Jason Schoenberger, Gina Haver, Samuel Reiff, and pianist Charles Levi will perform Broadway highlights and popular standards. Ms. Roberts was the original Laurie in Oklahoma!, and she has had a career spanning more than 50 years.

Jerome Kern Jazz

On Sunday, January 9 at 2:30 p.m., the Paul Joseph Quartet will play inspiring instrumental jazz renditions of classics including “All the Things You Are,” “Yesterdays,” “The Way You Look Tonight.” This distinguished quartet includes drummer Mike Corn, bassist Edgar Mills, and the mesmerizing violinist Susan Mitchell.

Jun Luke Foster, pianist

On Sunday, January 16 at 2:30 p.m., this remarkably talented eighteen-year-old, now attending Yale University, has been performing in piano recitals, concerts, competitions, and master classes since the age of eight. According to one critic, “It is rare even among professionals to hear Chopin played at this level of understanding.” This concert is made possible by funds from the Mildred and Dr. Rudolph Joseph Foundation.

The Ecclesiastical Chronicles: The Board

On Wednesday, January 12 at 2:30 p.m., Freeport author Raymond Gordon the nom de plume of Reverend Raymond Wilson, rector of the Church of the Transfiguration in Freeport, will explore the themes of this book and discuss his plans to continue the saga concerning the intricacies of ecclesiastical life.

The Twelfth Hour and Fire of God

On Wednesday, January 19 at 2:30 p.m., Freeport author Paul Hashagen, former chief of the Freeport Fire Department will tell the audience stories based on the history of fire service and his own experiences. He is retired from the FDNY after 25 years of service, 20 of them in Rescue Company 1.

Linked In for Career Success

On Saturday, January 15 at 10:30 a.m., career counselor Barbara Spinelli will presents an overview of LinkedIn, a powerful professional networking tool that can be used to set up a marketable profile, research companies, job search, and network.

Moonlight Over Paris by Freeport author K. A. Minton

On Friday, February 11 at 2:30 p.m., Mr. Minton discusses his first novel about Monique “Paris” Stevens, a singer who creates a buzz wherever she goes. Paris is a Brooklynite by way of Chicago who aspires to become a professional singer and recording artist, but her path to fame is met with multiple tragedies and blessings.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Volunteers from the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment will prepare 2010 income tax returns at the Library free of charge. Bring copies of last year’s federal and state returns, instruction booklets with labels, all 1099 and W-2 forms, and property tax bills.
This is a free service. It is not available for those with involved finances or those who own a business. Volunteers cannot prepare time-consuming returns. You will be assisted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please note that all dates and times are subject to change. VITA is a volunteer program. At this time, we do not know how many (if any) volunteers will be available. Look for a flyer in late January confi rming dates and times.

Tween Wii Party

On Thursday, February 24 at 2:30 p.m., join the Library's tween Wii party! Come and play some of your favorite Wii games, such as Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, and Super Mario Party 8. For students in grades 5 and 6.

Measuring Bones

On Thursday, February 24 at 11:15 a.m., the Long Island Science Center will show students how to examine, measure, and compare a variety of real animal bones. Together they will reassemble a model of a human skeleton. Each child will make an authentic neck decoration of sinew and real animal bone to take home. For students in grades 1-4. A nonrefundable materials fee of $1 is due at time of registration.

Phases of the Moon

On Thursday, February 24 at 10 a.m., the Long Island Science Center will present a program on the phases of the moon. Is the moon made of green cheese? Using a spotlight to simulate the sun, students will playact while they create the phases of the moon. Everyone will draw their own chart of the moon on paper as well as on an oatmeal cookie which they can eat! For children in grades PreK to K. A nonrefundable materials fee of $1 is due at time of registration.

Whales in the Winter

On Wednesday, February 23 at 7 p.m. the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum will present a program on the wondrous world of whales. Find out how they survive in freezing waters, touch real whale bones, try a blubber experiment, and make your own wintry whale snow globe to take home! For students in grades 1-4. A nonrefundable materials fee of $1 is due at time of
registration.

On Wednesday, February 23 at 6 p.m. the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum will present a program about all things whale! Touch whale bones and baleen from a whale’s mouth, learn how whales move, and create a paper whale puppet to swim home with! For children in grades PreK to K. On Tuesday, February 22 from 4 to 5 p.m., Yormah Generette will teach you about the history f hair braiding. Enjoy watching her illustrate some of her unique styles.

Mystery of Fingerprints presented by retired NYC detective John Whimple

On Tuesday, February 22 at 11 a.m., John Whimple, a fingerprint specialist, will discuss the different fingerprint patterns and how crimes are solved by using them. For children in grades 1-4.

3D Chocolate Cupcakes

On Tuesday, February 15 from 5 to 6:15 p.m., learn the technique of three-dimensional molding with Kids Edible Creations. Design three cupcakes using a variety of colored chocolates, and fill them with more delicious milk chocolate to complete your 3D masterpiece! For students in grades 5 and 6. A nonrefundable materials fee of $1 is due at time of registration.

Teen Movie Day

On Wednesday, February 23 at 2 p.m., sit back and relax while we watch a movie. We will select three movies from which you can vote for your favorite. The winning movie will be shown. Vote between January 1 and 30 in the Children’s Room.

Hair Braiding for Teens

On Tuesday, February 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., learn about the history of hair braiding from professional braider Yormah Generette. Enjoy watching her illustrate some of her unique styles.

What You Need to Know Before You Go to College

On Thursday, Janauary 27 at 6 p.m., join Professor and author John Roberts (Behind Closed Doors: What You Need to Know Long Before You Go to College), as he discusses the college experience from the viewpoint of the parent rather than the college recruiter. He will talk about such topics as approaching college as an investment, getting your money’s worth, and what you need to understand about the existing college structure.

SAT Workshop

On Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m., on March 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 get ready for the SATs! This workshop will focus on both the math and verbal sections. The Chimes by Charles Dickens

On Wednesday, December 15 at 2:30 p.m., actor David Houston will present an original reading of one of the most celebrated and requested of Dickens’ short novels. Published one year after A Christmas Carol, it was part of a series of five short stories with a strong social and moral message.

Sculptures by Benjamin C. Burton

Mr. Burton is a fine arts teacher at the Erasmus Hall Campus of the High School of Science and Mathematics in Brooklyn. His sculptures are finely wrought and highly evocative. His artwork will be on display from December 2 to January 29 in the lobby.

Gestation by Deborah Luken


Ms. Luken’s intricate yet subtle paintings are extremely well-crafted studies in metaphor taken from the shapes of trees and transformed into images of human anatomy. Humans, ideas, opinions, and all things gestate before being formed. A reception will be held on Sunday, December 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. Her artwork will be on display from December 2 to December 29.

Holiday Caroling

On Thursday, December 23 at 4 p.m., join us around the tree in the lobby as the superb Select Chorale and Mixed Chorus, under the direction of Monique Campbell-Retzlaff, present a selection of holiday carols and songs celebrating this joyful season.

The Holly and the Ivy: A Long Island Tradition

On Monday, December 20 at 2:30 p.m., Janet Emily Demarest will present a beautiful piano program with sing-alongs that will trace the unfolding of Yuletide history, folklore, and traditions celebrated by the various cultures on Long Island. Ms. Demarest is an educator, historian, and storyteller in residence at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

Freeport Community Chorale Holiday Concert


On Sunday, December 19 at 2 p.m., Maestro Gerry Kirby will conduct the Chorale in a medley
of seasonal music. Following the concert, refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Freeport Memorial Library.

Jeffrey Biegel, pianist


On Sunday, December 12 at 2:30 p.m., Jeffrey Biegel will play works by Bach, Chopin, and Gershwin. His electrifying technique has received critical acclaim worldwide. This concert was chosen by the Library’s Music Advisory Committee and is made possible in part, by funds from the Dr. Rudolph and Mildred Joseph Foundation.

Buyu Ambroise and the Blues in Red Band


On Sunday, December 5 at 2:30 p.m., come listen to the unique sounds of traditional Haitian rhythms woven together with contemporary jazz. Buyu Ambroise and the Blues in Red Band will be playing selections from their CDs Blues in Red and Marasa. This group has played at jazz venues in New York City, Miami, Boston, Montreal, and Haiti.

The Waterfront Six featuring vocalist, Micki Grant

On Sunday, November 28 at 2:30 p.m., the Freeport Memorial Library presents this unique Dixieland/swing band specializes in tunes from the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. The band will perform such favorites such as It Had to Be You, After You’re Gone, Alexander’s Ragtime Band, St. Louis Blues, and Avalon. Artie Miller, a versatile clarinetist, will perform his rendition of Begin the Beguine.

Beat the High Cost of College

On Wednesday, November 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Barry Fox, a college financial aid consultant will present a program on how to beat the high cost of college. Find out how to get your share of the billions of dollars in grants and loans that are available to college students. Learn about programs for which you might qualify, how much aid you might receive, and how to get started. Also, learn how to fill out the FAFSA form, plan a needs analysis, and negotiate with financial aid officers. For students in grades 7-12 and their parents.

From Railsplitter to President

On Sunday, November 21 at 2:30 p.m., Lou Del Bianco, actor and storyteller will present an interactive, dramatic program will portray Abraham Lincoln as a civil war president, frontiersman, and storyteller. Lincoln’s values: honesty, love of family, thirst for education, sense of justice and perseverance shine through this dynamic presentation. This program has been made possible by a grant from ALA Public Programs Office and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Can’t wait for winter? Well we can’t either! Come help us welcome this great season as we create a variety of winter crafts. Drop in at any time on Friday, November 26 between 2 and 3:30 p.m. For children in grades PreK-4th grade.

Parenting Challenges

On Thursday, November 4 at 7:30 p.m., Alicia Martinez, M.A., early childhood specialist will help answer questions regarding challenges parents face when their children are of elementary school age. Come share your stories and learn how others answer some of these tough questions. For parents or caregivers of students in grades 1-4.

Immigration Information Sharing program

On Wednesday, November 10, at 7:30 p.m., Linda G. Nanos, Esq., of the Nassau County Bar Association will answer questions in this information-gathering program on various immigration topics. Freeport residents may register at the Reference Desk anytime; nonresidents, November 3.

Strengthen Your Memory in Six Easy Steps

On Thursday, November 4, at 10:30 a.m, retired Professor Fred Chernow, author of The Sharper Mind, will demonstrate six simple strategies to improve your memory and reduce the frustrations of “senior moments.” Audience participation and a sense of humor will be part of the presentation.

A Soldier’s Story

On Thursday, November 4 at 7 p.m., the Freeport Historical Society and Bernie Rader will present a lecture. As a young soldier in the 94th Infantry Division, 301st Regiment, Company K, during World War II, Bernie Rader, a longtime Freeport resident, was captured by the Nazis. Rader was among those soldiers who were rescued in a prisoner exchange between the Allied and German troops. Mr. Rader will show For One English Officer, a documentary about the POW swap that saved 149 Allied soldiers and airmen including Mr. Rader. He will entertain questions after the film. Refreshments will be served.

Picturing America through the Eyes of African Americans

On Tuesday, November 16, 7:30 p.m. Author, Rochelle Alers will discuss the book, This Side of Brightness by Colum McCann. When an Irish immigrant is killed building the New York subway, a black co-worker supports the man’s family by marrying the widow. Copies of this book will be available at the Circulation Desk beginning October 19. Register for this program in the Reference Department, 516-379-3274, x505. This once-a-month book discussion is made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities Picturing America Programming Grant.

Bus Trip to see the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall

Freeport residents may purchase tickets in the lobby starting November 1; nonresidents, November 8. The dates are TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 30 & THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9.
SHOWTIME: 2:00 p.m. COST: $77 PER PERSON (check/money order only). BUS LEAVES: 10:00 a.m. from Freeport Recreation Ctr., 130 E. Merrick Rd., Freeport. BUS RETURNS: 4:30 p.m. (approximately). Upon arrival in Manhattan at noon, we will have lunch at Applebee’s Broadway and then take a short walk to the theater to attend the 2 p.m. show. Enjoy Santa’s arrival, the flawless precision of the Radio City Rockettes, the Parade of the Wooden Soldiers, and the stunning reenactment of the first Christmas in the “Living Nativity.” We cannot accommodate children under age 5. Invitation to Artists

Artists who work in oils, watercolors, graphic arts, photography, and 3-dimensional art work are invited to apply for a one-month, one person show at the Freeport Memorial Library in 2010-2011. There is no fee of any kind to the artist for exhibiting his/her work. The deadline for submission of an application with CD-Rom with ten images, or ten 8x10 photographs is February 4, 2011. Radio City Music Hall Bus Trip

On Monday, November 1 at 9 a.m., Freeport residents may purchase tickets to our annual bus trip to Radio City Music Hall. The show dates are Tuesday, November 30 and Thursday, December 9. Both shows will begin at 2 p.m. The cost is $77 per person, check or money order only and includes roundtrip transportation in a luxury coach, show tickets, lunch at Applebee's, and gratuities. The bus will leave the Freeport Recreation Center at 10 a.m., and return at approximately 4:30 p.m. Nonresidents may purchase tickets starting November 8.

Donald X. Clavin Jr., Talks about Taxes

On Tuesday, November 16 at 7 p.m., Mr. Clavin will present updated information on tax discounts and property tax exemptions. He will explain how to challenge your assessment; he will talk about new payment options, dates, times, and locations to pay your taxes, and the proposed E-Tax Bill which would enable you to receive your bill and receipts via email.

Job Club

On Saturday, November 6 at 10 a.m., the Library's career counselor, Barbara Spinelli will facilitate a group meeting where you can get support, share information, and network. This group will meet on Saturday mornings, twice a month and focus on a specific topic that relates to job searching and/or career advancement. Cold Stunned Turtles on Long Island

On Friday, November 5 at 2:30 p.m., the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation will educate everyone about the existence of sea turtles in our area and the need to monitor our beaches in the fall for sea turtles that have failed to migrate. Learn how to volunteer by just walking our local beaches.

A Guide for the Job Seeker with Disabilities

On Thursday, September 2, at 7 p.m., William Lupardo, a rehabilitation counselor, will present a program on how to handle possible interviewer prejudices. Other topics include what to wear and what to ask or not ask.

The Myth about Long-Term Care by Natalie Karp and Rona Loshak

On Tuesday, October 5, at 10 a.m., Ms. Karp and Ms. Loshak will present a program that will debunk many of the myths about long-tem care insurance.

Tracing Your African American Roots in America

On Saturday, September 25, at 2 p.m., Joysetta Pearse, certified genealogist, and Julius O. Pearse, president of the African Atlantic Genealogy Society will presented a program about genealogy and how to research your family history. Registration for this program takes place in the Reference Department beginning September 1. This program has been made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Picturing America programming grant.

Book Club in a Bag

Freeport patrons wishing to run a book club may borrow one of our new book club in a bag sets.

Each bag contains ten copies of the book club title, plus a binder with sample discussion questions, author information, and book reviews. Each set may be borrowed for 6 weeks.

Book Discussion with Professor Denton L. Watson

We are fortunate to have Professor Denton L. Watson reviewing the timeless classic Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison on Thursday August 9 at 7:00 pm at the Library. The book has remained one of the most powerful portrayals of the experience of African-Americans in our times.

Denton L. Watson, formerly director of public relations for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is an associate professor at SUNY College at Old Westbury. He is author of Lion in the Lobby, Clarence Mitchell, Jr.’s Struggle for the Passage of Civil Rights Laws and editor of The Papers of Clarence Mitchell Jr. In addition, Mr. Watson serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Freeport memorial Library. Copies of the book are available at the Circulatiuon Department of the Library. This book discussion is made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities Picturing America Programming Grant.

Senior Property Tax Reduction for the Village of Freeport and Nassau County

On Monday, August 30 and September 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., by appointment only, Mr. Mazza, a VITA volunteer, will be at the Library to help seniors, veterans, and those who are disabled complete initial application and annual renewal forms for property tax reductions. Applicants must have annual incomes less than $40,000. Those renewing their request must bring their renewal forms. Those who are filing for the first time may pick up an application at the Library. Picturing America Through the Eyes of African Americans

On Monday, August 9 at 7 p.m., Professor Denton Watson will lead a discussion on Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man. Registration for this program will begin July 1 in the Reference Department, 516-379-3274, x505. Picturing America is a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities, distributed in cooperation with the American Library Association. The Institute of Museum and Library Services has provided major support for Picturing America
programs in public libraries.

Computer Sale

On Saturday, August 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Library will be selling used computers and related equipment via a ticket number system. Each system will be numbered and assigned a price and each participant will receive a numbered ticket If your number is called, you will be eligible to purchase one computer. The computers are sold “as-is.” You must be a Freeport resident, and over the age of 18 in order to participate in the sale. Please bring your Freeport Library card or valid ID. FREE PROSTATE SCREENING EXAMS

On Monday, August 9, from 3:30-6:30 P.M., Senator Charles J. Fuschillo in conjunction with the Integrated Medical Foundation and Bostwick Laboratories, will sponsor a no out-of-pocket cost prostate cancer screening at the Freeport Memorial Library. All men are welcome to get screened as part of the program, regardless of whether or not they have insurance. Screenings will include a digital rectal exam and a PSA blood test. Please bring valid ID containing an address such as a Library card or driver’s license. Participants will be notified of the exam results. Summer + Reading = Prizes! Join our Summer Reading Club, and e-mail or write short reviews about the books you read. Reporting starts on June 25 and ends on August 14. Last day to join the reading club is August 9. Books can be on any topic, but they must be on your reading level. Any book from the YA section will be accepted. Reviews should be written on books you read during the vacation, not books you read during the school year. One review will be accepted per day, and it may be written in English or Spanish. Make a Splash, Read! 2010 Summer Reading Club & Read-to-Me Summer Reading Club

Read six or more books for this Summer’s Reading Club and get invited to a party at the end of the summer. Book reports can be written, oral, or in response to our question spinner. Children who are not reading yet may draw a picture about each book that has been read to them. Register when you come in to report on your first book. Books must be on the proper reading level to be accepted. Reporting starts on June 25 and ends on August 14. Last date to join is August 12. No more than two reports will be accepted at one time. Prizes will be awarded as long as supplies last. Certificates will be awarded for all those registered.

Summer Reading Club Kickoff meet author, David Adler

On Friday, June 25, at 2:30 p.m., Meet award-winning and local children’s author, David Adler and learn how he created his wonderful stories such as, Cam Jansen, Bones, The Babe & I, You Can, Toucan, Math and many more. Mr. Adler will discuss how he created his stories, and how they got published and into the hands of children at the library. This family program is for all children up to 4th grade.

Did you know that the Library offers more than books and DVDs to our community? We currently have on staff:

Ms. Elsy Gomez, our bilingual, part-time social worker. Ms. Gomez will be available to parents and caregivers of children under the age of 5 on Monday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Ms. Leticia Nuñez, our bilingual notary. Ms. Nuñez works Fridays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Mr. Julius Pearce, our genealogist. In 1994, he co-founded the African-Atlantic Genealogical Society at Freeport with his wife, Joysetta, who is a board-certified genealogist. Mr. Pearce works at the Library on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ms. Barbara Spinelli, our career counselor. Ms. Spinelli is the career counselor at the Library where she works on Wednesdays from 5:30 p.m to 9 p.m., and on Saturdays from 1 to 4 p.m.

Book Discussion

On Thursday, April 22, at 11 a.m., Mr. Paul Arfin will discuss his book, Portrait of a Peace Corps Gringo. Paul will talk about his early childhood, his growing social consciousness, and how his life as a Peace Corps volunteer in Colombia in the 1960's, changed his personal and professional life.

Women's Day Magazine Library Contest

As the economy continues its slump, libraries nationwide continue to play an important role in communities everywhere, as people turn to them for free entertainment, to connect to the Internet and look for jobs. This spring, the Freeport Memorial Library, the American Library Association (ALA) and Woman's Day magazine want to hear your thoughts on why the library is important to your community.
From now through May 9, 2010, women 18 and over are invited to tell their story in 700 words or less and send it to womansday@ala.org. Thirtieth Annual Juried Photography Show

This premier show sponsored by the Long Island Council at Freeport will hold its awards reception in the Library on June 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Health Fair for the Physically Challenged

On Saturday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to noon, the Library will sponsor a health fair for the physically challenged and their families and friends. Various organizations will share information on the different types of services and products that are available, and a speaker will present information about current health issues.

Preschool Fair!

On Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. to noon, the Library is hosting a preschool fair. If you are considering sending your child to preschool and are curious about programs available to the community, there will be representatives from local schools who will explain their programs and answer your questions. Also, see what age appropriate programs the Library has to offer. This program is open to the general public and no registration is required.

7. IRS and/or NYS booklets, if you have received them.
