JULY 3 - Lovely and Amazing
The Marks family is a tightly knit quartet of women. Jane is the affluent matriarch whose three daughters seem to have nothing in common except a strange sort of idealism. Each of the women seeks redemption in her own haphazard way. This is an independent film. Rated R; 89 min.; 2002.

JULY 10 - Changeling
Single mom Christine Collins leaves for work one day and comes home to find her son missing. five months later, the police return a boy to her, but she knows he is not her son. This film follows her struggle as a woman in 1920s Los Angeles trying to find out the truth about her child.

JULY 17 - Raise the Red Lantern
Songlian, a young educated woman in China must give up her future to become the wife of a wealthy landowner after her father dies. She soon realizes that her master’s attention carries power, status, and privilege. As the competition for the lord’s favor heats up, each wife schemes to make sure she has the red lantern at her door. This is an independent film. Rated PG; 125 min.; 1991.

Thirteen-year-old Briony forever changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister’s lover of a crime he did not commit. This story unfolds during the course of World War II.

To receive your certificate, you must participate in both Part I and Part II.

AARP Mature Drivers Course

On WEDNESDAY, JULY 1 and AUGUST 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Cost: check or money order payable to AARP; $12 for members, $14 for nonmembers. Freeport residents can sign up at anytime during July and August. Nonresidents may register for the July 1 class starting June 23; for the August 5 class starting July 28.

Blood Drive

On FRIDAY, JULY 10, 2:30 p.m., Long Island Blood Services will be at the Library to collect blood. Donors must be between the ages of 17 and 75 and weigh at least 110 pounds. Bring valid ID and know your Social Security number. To schedule an appointment, please call the Library’s Job and Education Center at 379-3274, ext. 504.

Presented by the Center for Science Teaching and Learning on WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 11 a.m. to noon. Learn about extinct, endangered, and protected wildlife. Rare and unique confiscated pelts, teeth, and dozens of other specimens are the centerpiece of this eye-opening workshop.

Mask Creations presented by the Long Island Children’s Museum

MONDAY, JULY 20, 11 a.m. to noon.

Throughout history, people made masks to symbolize spirits, animals, emotions, and characters. Learn about the role masks play in ceremonies, festivals, dance, theater, and fashion. Create your own masks by cutting shapes to build low-relief faces. For grades 1-4. A nonrefundable

Wizard Cupcakes on a Cone! presented by Leslie Vanegas

Come in and get cool while creating some fun summer crafts. Paint and decorate a backyard birdhouse, a stylish beach bag, a sun-out-of -your eyes visor, and a flip-flop frame to hold your summer memories.

Kayaking on Long Island

Presented by Nick De Nezzo on FRIDAY, JULY 17, 7 p.m. Long Island, with over 1,600 miles of coastline including ocean, bays and rivers, is an ideal place to kayak. Learn about the different types of kayaks and where to kayak. Mr. De Nezzo will also review different strokes, rescue manuevers, and equipment choices.

Great Books: Fifth Reading Series with Dave Opatow

A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms by Jonathan Swift. On Tuesday, July 14, at 1:30 p.m.

Enjoy this excerpt from Swift’s most famous work, Gulliver’s Travels, a satire on human nature. This is Swift’s best known full-length work, and is a classic of English literature.

Art Deco Style in Paris and New York presented by Vesna Mison,
artist and art historian.

Art Deco was a popular international art design movement from 1925 to 1939. Ms. Mison will explain how this style manifested itself in architecture, interior design, industrial design, fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and film.

Our first stop will be a tour of the spectacularly beautiful Kykuit,
overlooking the Hudson River, the former home of the Rockefellers.
After a tour of the mansion, we will visit a series of beautifully terraced gardens. Then we will be on our way to the Sea Cove Restaurant for lunch. The cost of the trip includes roundtrip transportation in a luxury coach, admission to the mansion and gardens, lunch, taxes, and some gratuities. On WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 7 p.m., Phil Costa leads a 17-piece Count
Basie–style band, performing new jazz and great nostalgic hits
from the 1930s to the 1950s. Five saxophones, four trumpets, four
trombones, four rhythm musicians, and a blues vocalist make for a
terrific sound.
