Save the Date!
Our annual bus trip to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular will take place on Tuesday, November 29 and Thursday, December 8. The cost is $70 per person which includes cost of the show and travel to and from Radio City; lunch will be on your own. Freeeport residents may purchase tickets in the Library's lobby on Tuesday, November 1st; non-residents on Monday, November 7.
St. Francis Hospital Outreach Mobile Van
On Monday, October 24 at 10 a.m., the St. Francis Hospital Community Outreach Mobile Bus will visit the Library and provide free blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and cardiac screenings. Patient education will be provided. Physician referrals are needed for clients under the age of 18. No registration is required.
So You Want to Be a Ghost Hunter?
On Sunday, October 23 at 2 p.m., journey with Long Island's most famous pair of ghost hunters as they investigate Long Island graveyards and other haunted locations. Through video, still photography, and voice recordings, Joseph Flammer and Diane Hill of Paranormal Adventurers offer evidence of ghostly phenomena. The audience is encouraged to share their personal paranormal experiences. Please register at the Reference Desk.
Famous Freeporters: Saints, Sinners, and Stars
On Saturday, October 22 at 2 p.m., join us as the Library welcomes Freeport High School class of 1956 to its 55th reunion and to a presentation on notable Freeporters. We will discuss the lives and accomplishments of local celebrities including Lou Reed, Harold Varmus, Elinor Smith, George Morton Levy, Erik Larson, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and more.

On Wednesday, October 5 at 7 p.m., Donald Clavin Jr., receiver of taxes for the Town of Hempstead, will be at the Library to explain how to lower your tax bill through property tax exemptions (Seniors, STAR, Veterans, Disability, Home Improvement, etc.). Bernard Rader, WWII Veteran and POW
On Thursday, September 22 at 6:30 p.m. join Freeporter Bernie Rader, a rifleman for the 94th Infantry Division, 301st Regiment, who survived captivity and starvation as a prisoner of war, but found friendship among the local countrymen. In 2007, Mr. Rader was awarded the French Legion of Honor for all his efforts in the war.

Senior Property-tax Reduction for the Village of Freeport and Nassau County
On Wednesday, September 7 and Monday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., by appointment only, Mr. Joseph Mazza will be at the Library to help applicants with annual incomes of less tha $40,000 to complete initial applications and annual renewal forms for property-tax reductions. Signs of Nonviolence
Join us as we kick off the Library's participation in the Signs of Nonviolence campaign, a countywide, month-long initiative sponsored by Freeport Pride. Obamawala: Tales of Hope and Harmony in Africa and America
Join Freeport author Bahadur Tejani on Wednesday, July 13 at 2:30 p.m., as he discusses his book, Obamawala, a colelction of stories and hope and harmony from East Africa and America. It is based on the inspiration created by Thurgood Marshall and the American dream of equality and opportunity when Marshall met the author as a student leader in 1963 in Uganda.

Art lecture: Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall
On Monday, June 13 at 2:30 p.m., join author Monica Randall for a lecture on Laurelton Hall. Louis Comfort Tiffany, the master glassworks genius, completed his hundred-room Oyster Bay mansion in 1905. It became the setting for some of the most dazzling parties ever hosted in the country. Many of the rare images presented are from a private collection belonging to Tiffany’s granddaughter, Louise L. Platt.
A Tribute to Peggy Lee presented by the Diane Hoffman Jazz Quartet
On Sunday, May 1 at 2:30 p.m., Enjoy some of Peggy Lee's biggest hits performed by the Diane Hoffman Jazz Quartet. Peggy Lee was first propelled to fame in the 1940s when she sang with the Benny Goodman Band. She wrote hundreds of songs and was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Pete Kelly’s Blues.

It was first performed at the Paris Opéra on June 13, 1855. - Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) Part 1 by Richard Strauss on Thursday, April 21, 1 p.m. This three-act comic opera was written by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from the novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas by Louvet de Couvrai and Molière’s comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac.

Gail Storm Jazz Trio: A Tribute to the Great Women in Jazz
On Sunday, April 17, 2:30 p.m., Gail Storm, pianist and vocalist from New York, who specializes in interpreting and performing classic blues and jazz, will be at the Library. Ms. Storm draws her musical influences from traditional performers such as Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, and Louis Jordan. She has been compared to Diana Krall and Marcia Ball.

On Sunday, April 10, at 2:30 p.m., Steve Adelson, the world’s premier Chapman Stick player, will perform on this unique instrument, which was invented in 1974 by Emmett Chapman. Mr. Adelson will explain the revolutionary techniques he uses on his twelve-string fingerboard. His repertoire ranges from pop tunes to Latin to swing performed in a duo setting with percussion.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Bernard Malamud
On Wednesday, April 13, 2 p.m., Shula Hirsch, retired Hofstra professor, will lecture on one of the great American Jewish authors of the 20th century. Bernard Malamud wrote eight novels and 54 short stories. His novel The Fixer won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
Golden Age of Radio with Herb Norman
On Friday, April 22, 2 p.m., former broadcaster Herb Norman will take a look back at prime-time radio classics such as Eddie Cantor, Jack Benny, and Fred Allen. Welcome New Director
Mr. Ken Bellafiore has been a librarian for over twenty
years and has worked in libraries for thirty years. He comes
to us from Nassau Community College where he has been
a Professor in the Library Department since 1996. If he
looks familiar that’s because he has worked part-time at the
Freeport Memorial Library since 1989, when was enrolled
in the Master Degree program in Library Science at the
Palmer School of Information and Library Science. Ken
was director at Lakeview Public Library from 2007-2008.
He is the current president of the Nassau County Library

Freeport Author Paul Hashagen
On Wednesday, January 19th, Freeport author Paul Hashagen discussed his two latest novels, The Twelfth Hour and Fire of God. Paul served as captain of Excelsior Hook and Ladder Company 1 in Freeport from 1981-1982, where he is still an active member today. He joined the FDNY in 1978 and retired after twenty-five years of service. Paul was an Adjunct Professor at John Jay College in Manhattan. He has written numerous articles for Firehouse Magazine as well as two novels on the history of the FDNY.
