MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE

Sponsored by American Legion Post 342. MONDAY, MAY 25, 10:45 a.m. At the conclusion of the Memorial Day parade, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Library.

Bus Trip to Kykuit, North Tarrytown, NY


Date: WEDNESDAY, June 24
Cost: $84.00
Bus leaves: 8 a.m.
Bus returns: 5 p.m. (approx.)

Our first stop will be a tour of the spectacularly beautiful Kykuit, overlooking the Hudson River, the former home of the Rockefellers. After a tour of the mansion, we will visit a series of beautifully terraced gardens. Then we will be on our way to the Sea Cove Restaurant for lunch. The cost of the trip includes roundtrip transportation in a luxury coach, admission to the mansion and gardens, lunch, taxes, and some gratuities. Registration for Freeport residents begins on Tuesday, May 5; nonresidents, Tuesday, May 12.

Express Yourself @ Your Library: YA 2009 Summer Reading Club!

Summer + Reading = Prizes! Join our Summer Reading Club, and e-mail or write short reviews about the books you read. Reporting starts June 26 and ends August 15. Last day to join is August 13. Review forms are available in the Children’s Room, or you can email your review to us at www.frya@freeportlibrary. info. Prizes can be picked up the next time you’re at the library.

Be Creative @ Your Library!

2009 Summer Reading Club and Read-to-Me Summer Reading Club.
Read six or more books for this Summer’s Reading Club and get invited to a party at the end of the summer. Book reports can be written, oral, or in response to our question spinner. Children who are not reading yet may draw a picture about each book that has been read to them. Register when you come in to report on your first book. Books must be on the proper reading level to be accepted. Reporting starts on June 26 and ends on August 15. Last date to join is August 13. No more than two reports will be accepted at one time. Prizes will be awarded as long as supplies last. Certificates will be awarded for all those registered.

All New Tween Summer Reading Club 2009

Be the first to particpate in a summer reading club designed for 5th and 6th graders. Reporting starts on June 26 and ends on August 15. Books reported on must be on the appropriate level to be accepted. You can either fill out a review form that you can pick up in the Children’s Room or you can email us at fryouthservices@freeportlibrary.info. Prizes can be picked up the next time you are in the library!

Blood Drive

Swan Lake by Peter Tchaikovsky.
THURSDAY, MAY 21 at 1 p.m.
Swan Lake, the pinnacle of classic ballet, originated as a set of dances to be performed at home by the children of Tchaikovsky’s sister. Later, lengthened and orchestrated, the ballet was a total failure at its premiere because of inept performances.

Freeport Community Chorale Spring Concert

Maestro Gerry Kirby has given the Freeport community the gift of glorious choral music for many years. This year he will conduct the chorale in a medley of famous songs from Bach to Sondheim.

The Virtuoso Superstars of Classical Music

This program highlights the works of Kurt Weill and Alec Wilder. Kurt Weill is best known for his score of The Three Penny Opera, while Alec Wilder wrote many pieces such as It’s So Peaceful in the Country, While We’re Young, and I’ll be Around.

The Lincoln Memorial

Presented by Louise Cella Caruso, art historian.
THURSDAY, MAY 14, 2:30 p.m.
Architect Henry Bacon and sculptor Daniel Chester French are responsible for one of the most moving monuments of our history. Ms. Cella Caruso will present the story of the men behind this national memorial.

Legacy of New Deal Art on Long Island

Sponsored by the Freeport Historical Society.
MONDAY, MAY 11, 7 p.m.
Dr. Natalie Naylor, professor emerita of Hofstra University, will discuss the WPA and New Deal art on Long Island. Fifiteen minutes prior to the lecture, the group will meet at the Freeport
Post Office to view the murals of WPA artist William Gropper.

This past year the Library increased the number of computers available for adults from 13 to 32. A grant was secured to renovate the Children’s Room and to refurbish the circulation desk. During the coming year the Library plans to continue to reconfigure the adult area to provide more effective service.

For Everyone…
Book clubs include Talking About Literature, the Oprah Book Club, Soul with Heart, and Grupo de Conversación de Libros Latinos.

Electronic resources include over fifty subscription databases, including downloadable videos and audiobooks accessible from home through the Library’s website: www.nassaulibrary.org/freeport

For Children and Parents…
Programs include museum passes, tutoring, reading clubs, and parent/child workshops.

For Young Adults…
Programs for students in grades 7-12 include book, music, and film discussion groups, and a
summer reading club.

The support and guidance of volunteers – including the Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Library, and the Art and Music Advisory Committees – make these programs and services possible. Every Freeporter is encouraged to use the Library. The Library is open 7 days a week during most of the year, and 6 days a week during the summer.

The $149,609 (2.77%) overall increase will be funded by the Board using Capital Improvement funds. The proposed budget represents no increase to the taxpayer.
